It's a good argument, but not an entirely viable one. What happens after the internship? The paper's not going to hire the intern, which means the student has to (hopefully) get one or more other internships. Meanwhile, papers are going to get in worse shape and they'll stop filling any open positions with new full-timers. They'll just open a revolving door for new interns to come through the door every 4-5 months. Finally, at some point, those students will graduate and need a steady income with the necessary benefits. One isn't hiring; one's not finding a full-time job. There'll be a growing group of fresh talented Jrnl grads who are Web-savvy; hungry and waiting to prove themselves, but the papers (that have survived) will not be able to hire 90% of them. There doesn't seem to be a real end-solution for both parties. At least not right now.
